Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Puducherry went to polls on May 16, 2016, bringing to an end the election marathon in five Indian states in 2016. The other two States - Assam and West Bengal - had already completed their polling schedule. Assam had a two-phase election while West Bengal had polls spread over six phases and seven different days. Interestingly, both those States had registered a voter turnout in excess of 80 per cent. In Tamil Nadu, at the end of the day, about 74 per cent voters cast their vote while in Kerala, the turnout was close to 72 per cent. Puducherry recorded nearly 82 per cent turnout. These were, however, provisional figures that are subject to change subsequently when the final count is done. The counting of votes will take place on May 19, 2016.
