Election Commission's Compendium of Instructions on Paid News

The issue of paid news has been hotly debated in the public domain, particularly as the role of the media in influencing voters assumes greater significance during elections. The Press Council of India defines paid news as "Any news or analysis appearing in any media (Print & Electronic) for a price in cash or kind as consideration".

Since June 2010, the Election Commission of India (ECI) started issuing instructions to State and district officials to scrutinize, identify and report cases of paid news through a carefully laid out mechanism and process.

The latest Compendium of Instructions on Paid News and Related Matters, was issued by the ECI in February, 2014
