Mukul Kumar’s research explores the environmental history and political economy of India’s urban transformations. Mukul holds an MPhil in Development Studies from the University of Cambridge and is currently a PhD Candidate in the Department of City and Regional Planning at the University of California, Berkeley.
Mukul has written about land rights in Chennai’s coastal fishing communities; the politics of gentrification in Tamil Nadu’s State Action Plan for Climate Change; and the history and historiography of landed property relations. His writing has been published in Economic and Political Weekly, Cultural Anthropology Online, Down to Earth, and the Berkeley Journal of Sociology.
At UC Berkeley, Mukul has taught courses in the fields of development studies and classical social theory. Through his teaching and research, Mukul combines an interdisciplinary approach to the social sciences with a commitment to social justice in order to address some of the defining public policy challenges of the twenty-first century, including global economic inequality and climate change.
Research :
As a Public Policy Scholar with The Hindu Centre for Politics and Public Policy, Mukul will study processes of urbanization and land use change within the context of north Chennai’s coastal ecologies.
