On February 14, 2017, the Supreme Court of India delivered its verdict on one of India's most high-profile corruption cases in which it held that the late Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Jayalalithaa, and three others were guilty of holding assets disproportionate to their known sources of income. It upheld a trial court verdict and restored the judgement delivered by the Special Judge, John Michael Cunha, on September 27, 2014, sentencing Jayalalithaa, Sasikala Natarajan, V.N. Sudhakaran, and J. Elavarasi to Simple Imprisonment of four years. As Jayalalithaa had expired, the appeals against her were abated.

The political outcome of this verdict was that Sasikala, who had staked a claim to be sworn in as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu a few days before the judgment was delivered by the Supreme Court, was jailed in Bengaluru on February 15, 2017, to serve the remaining period of her jail term.
