Recommendations of Working Group on Urban Transport for 12th Five Year Plan

Cities and towns in India are expected to contribute about 70 per cent of the country's GDP by the year 2030. Also, India's urban population is likely to grow from 28 per cent in 2001 to over 40 per cent in 2031. However, provision of urban services, especially mobility, for the growing population has not kept pace with the rate of increase in urbanisation. The urban transport scene is characterised by declining share of public and non-motorised transport, sheer neglect of pedestrians, cyclists, and public transport users, and increased motorisation. The working group on urban transport for the 12th Five Year Plan, in its report, identified 10 goals in line with National Urban Transport Policy 2006. The working group recommended an investment of Rs. 3.88 lakh crore to achieve these goals.
