2055. Scientists join hands targeting to synthesize compounds to inhibit maturation & propagation of COVID 19 virus - Ministry of Science & Technology

Scientists from India, Russia, Brazil, and South Africa will work together to repurpose, validate and synthesise lead compounds against main protease and RNA replicas, the enzyme that catalyzes the replication of RNA, of SARS-CoV-2. There have been some recent media reports alleging that India’s toll of excess deaths during the pandemic could be in millions, terming the official COVID-19 death toll as ‘vastly undercounted’.

In these news reports quoting findings from some recent studies,US & European countries’ age-specific infection fatality rates have been used to calculate excess deaths in India based on the sero-positivity. Life insurance benefits are being provided under Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Package (PMGKP): Insurance Scheme for Health Workers Fighting COVID-19. The scheme provides a comprehensive personal accident cover of Rs. 50 lakhs to healthcare providers, including community health workers and private health workers drafted by the Government for COVID19 related responsibilities, who may have to be in direct contact and care of COVID-19 patients and who may be at risk of being impacted by it. 1981. Union Home Secretary reviews COVID-19 situation in North Eastern (NE) States and Union Territories - Ministry of Home Affairs

The Union Home Secretary chaired a meeting here today to review the COVID-19 situation in all the North Eastern (NE) States and Union Territories (UTs). During the meeting, current status and trends on the active cases, Case Fatality Rate (CFR), Case Positivity Rate (CPR) and vaccination status in respect of all the UTs and NE States was discussed. It was also noted that out of 73 districts in the country with CPR above 10 percent, 46 districts are in NE States, where strict containment measures need to be taken as per extant guidelines. 5.34 p.m. IST. Q- What is INSACOG?

A- The Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG) is a national multi-agency consortium of Genome Sequencing Laboratories (RGSLs) laboratories established by the Government of India on 30 December 2020. Initially, this consortium had 10 laboratories. Subsequently, the scope of laboratories under INSACOG was expanded and at present there are 28 laboratories under this Consortium which monitor the genomic variations in SARS-CoV-2. 12.45 p.m. IST. 1974. Less than 40,000 Daily New Cases reported in last 24 hours - Ministry of Health and Family Welfare

India has reported less than 40,000 (39,796) daily new cases in the last 24 hours. Less than 50,000 Daily New Cases have been reported since eight continuous days. This is a result of sustained and collaborative efforts by the Centre and the States/UTs.India has also been witnessing a continuous fall in the active caseload. The country’s Active Caseload today stands at 4,82,071. Dr. N.K. Arora, Chairperson of the COVID-19 Working Group of the National Technical Advisory Group on Immunization (NTAGI) spoke to DD News, on the vaccination guidelines for pregnant women, issued by the Health Ministry today

A Question of the Safety of Two Lives

Dr. N K Arora informed that the increased mortality of pregnant women during the second wave of COVID-19 has led to this decision. "During the second wave, it was seen that mortality rates of pregnant women infected by COVID-19 had increased by two to three times, in comparison to the first wave. Under such a situation, it was felt that pregnant women should also become beneficiaries of the COVID-19 vaccine. In case of pregnant women, it involves the safety of two lives - the mother and the child in her womb. Hence, the country has decided to vaccinate pregnant women." 6.33 p.m. IST. Read more... 1966. Operational Guidance for COVID-19 Vaccination of Pregnant Women - Ministry of Health and Family Welfare

Background: COVID-19 infection during pregnancy may result in rapid deterioration of health of pregnant women and could also affect the fetus. Experts are of the view that the benefits of vaccination to the pregnant women outweigh its potential risks. Based on the recommendations from National Technical Advisory Group on Immunization (NTAGI), MoHFW has approved vaccination of pregnant women against COVID-19 with the condition that the pregnant women may be informed about the risks of exposure to COVID-19 infection along with the risks and benefits associated with the COVID-19 vaccines available in the country.
