A GOVERNOR'S VISIT

West Bengal Governor M. K. Narayanan visits The Hindu Centre

The Governor of West Bengal, M.K. Narayanan, urged think tanks to come out with recommendations that could be used by the Government to solve existing problems faced by the country and to prevent their recurrence. Mr. Narayanan made his observations during a 90-minute interaction at the Hindu Centre for Politics and Public Policy.

Research forays by Public Policy scholars will be more useful in tackling specific problems and issues if they go beyond producing abstract papers, and suggest what the Government “should be doing’’ on the ground to both help resolve such problems and avert their recurrence, the Governor of West Bengal, Mr. M. K. Narayanan, said on Thursday.

In an informal interaction during a visit to The Hindu Centre For Politics and Public Policy (THCPPP), Mr. Narayanan, who was former National Security Advisor, pointed out that a think-tank like the THCPPP, given the high credibility and wide respect of The Hindu , could make a difference if its scholars go beyond detailed, descriptive analysis of generic problems that beset the country - whether it be communal strife, insurgency, or intelligence failures - to present some possible prescriptions to help resolve them.

The Hindu Centre’s Director, Dr. Malini Parthasarathy, explained the Centre’s different streams of activities to the Governor.

Mr. N. Ram, Director, Kasturi and Sons Ltd (KSL) and Member of the Board of Management of Centre, Mr. N. Murali, Director, KSL, Mr. Arun Anant, CEO and Member of the Board of Management of the Centre, Mr. V. Jayanth, Managing Editor of The Hindu , a Public Policy Scholar and staff of the Hindu Centre, and senior journalists from The Hindu Group of Publications, were among those who participated in the 90-minute interaction.

Ms. Vasundhara Sirnate, Chief Coordinator of Research, presented an overview of the Centre’s research activities by its first batch of researchers, comprising five Public Policy Scholars, and Mr. M.R. Venkatesh, Chief Political Coordinator, highlighted the recent events organised by the Centre, including the recent expert consultation on Telangana held at Hyderabad.
